The Dutch government is working hard to make smoking something of the past. One of the goals of the National Prevention Agreement is that all women will refrain from smoking during pregnancy by 2040. The government’s objective for 2020 is that the percentage of pregnant women who smoke will have decreased from 9% (in 2016) to less than 5% in 2020.
The maternity care system plays an important role in motivating and supporting pregnant women to quit smoking.
